Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Chiropractic?
A: Chiropractic is an art, science and philosophy of evaluating the nervous system for subluxations and correcting those subluxations to restore health and healing to the body.
*Now what does THAT mean?
Chiropractic looks for misalignments in your spine and interference to your nervous system in order to find areas to adjust you, to restore normal balance in your body.
Q: Why is the nervous system important?
A: The nervous system is made up of your brain and spinal cord. It literally coordinates the function and healing of every cell, organ and tissue in your body.
Q: How do you assess the nervous system?
A: We use a variety of orthopedic and neurological tests, exam procedures and also diagnostic equipment such as surface EMG (electromyography), thermal scanning and x-rays (if needed).
Q: What is a subluxation?
A: A subluxation is a term used for a vertebrae shifted out of alignment causing nervous system interference.
At Vital Family Chiropractic, we look at subluxation from a model that recognizes all spinal joints should be moving in order to keep open communication from the brain to the rest of the body. In this sense, a subluxation would be a joint not properly moving in any way.
Q: How do I get subluxations?
A: There are three basic causes of subluxations. Physical causes could include birth trauma, slips and falls, accidents, repetitive motions, desk jobs and improper lifting. Emotions such as grief, anger and fear can cause subluxations. Chemical causes could include alcohol, drugs, pollution and poor nutrition.
Q: What is an adjustment?
A: A chiropractic adjustment is performed by a Doctor of Chiropractic as a specific impulse (using the hands, an instrument or a table) placed into a segment to correct a subluxation. An adjustment restores normal motion in the joint, allowing communication between the brain and the body to be restored as well.
Q: Will an adjustment hurt?
A:Under normal circumstances, chiropractic adjustments are painless. We have many infants and newborns who sleep through their adjustments. We also have a lot of patients who only experience relief after an adjustment. However, those who have had a recent injury or trauma may have muscle tightness or spasm. In this instance, your first few adjustments may not be comfortable but the discomfort should subside quickly. We have many patients who never experience discomfort after an adjustment but minor discomfort is possible.
Q: What if I experience symptoms after an adjustment?
A: A small minority of people may experience discomfort, pain, or awkward symptoms after an adjustment. These responses are typically short-lived, occur primarily when the vertebra was significantly subluxated (out of place) prior to being adjusted. There are a few possible causes of such responses:
– Some people experience a detoxification of the body after an adjustment. When poisons leave the system, there may be discomfort such as headache, sniffles, a slight fever, drowsiness, or lethargy.
– Muscles will realign in coordination with the spine after an adjustment. If your muscles are used to holding your spine in a certain position, sometimes they want to return to the position they were in previously. Often, these are muscles that haven’t worked properly for years, and may have been weakened. This condition is temporary and will disappear after the muscles have strengthened themselves.
– Sometimes, nerves that were impinged for years are now “coming back to life,” and becoming more sensitive again. Unlike the majority of drugs, chiropractic adjustments aren’t designed just to “make you feel good,” but to “make you FEEL.” Improved sensitivity and awareness are necessary and desirable. Old injury pains may be reawakened in order for the healing to occur.
Q: How can I prepare for an adjustment?
A: Relax. Dr. Whitley will explain everything to you before you're ever adjusted to ensure you understand the purpose behind what we will be doing. Before your adjustment, we will instruct you how to get on the table and we will remind you to lie on the adjusting table face down with your arms hanging to the floor to rest your spinal muscles. After your adjustment you will roll to your side and then come to a seat. This is the easiest way for your spine to transition from lying to sitting.
Additionally, adjustments help your body's natural detoxification processes so we do recommend drinking plenty of water after your adjustment (and even when you're not getting adjusted).
Q: What do you treat?
A: The only thing we treat in our office is subluxation. Although we see many patients who have a variety of different conditions, we only diagnose and correct subluxation.
Q: Can chiropractors treat children?
A: Dr. Whitley is trained through the International Pediatric Chiropractic Association to evaluate and treat children.
Q: What happens on my first visit?
A: Check out our "What to Expect" tab.
Q: How long will it take for me to start feeling better?
A: Some patients experience almost instant relief. Others discover it can take many weeks or months. Many factors can affect the healing process, including:
The severity of the structural misalignments causing your problem.
How long you have had them.
How rapidly your body responds to chiropractic care, influenced by age, mental attitude, elasticity of the muscles and ligaments
Your ability to avoid additional stress and strain while your body is healing.
However, we know that even though you may not "feel" better instantly, your body is HEALING better immediately after a chiropractic adjustment
Q: Does insurance cover chiropractic care?
A: It depends. In all situations with insurance, chiropractic care is dictated by your insurance plan and limits. We do not think it is in your best interest to allow a third party to dictate how much or how little care you need. Because of this, we are not "in network" with any insurance providers.
We make care affordable for all of our patients. We want your whole family to be able to be a patient in our office. By not participating with your insurance company, we are able to keep our fees lower, offer you more value and also give you the care you need and deserve.
